Custom radiator fan or standard replacement?

24 July 2026

When a radiator fan needs replacing, it’s tempting to simply match the old one and move on. Sometimes that’s the right call. But if the original fan’s hard to source, the cooling system has changed, or performance wasn’t great to begin with, a custom option may make more sense. The key thing to remember is that a fan that fits isn’t always a fan that’ll perform properly.

When a standard replacement works

A standard replacement’s usually a good choice when the existing cooling system works well and you know the original fan specification.

If the radiator, shroud, fan speed, operating conditions, and available space haven’t changed, there’s often no need to reinvent the wheel.

But don’t compare diameter alone. Blade shape, pitch, blade count, rotation, hub size, and material can all affect airflow, pressure, power use, and noise.

When custom makes more sense

A custom radiator fan’s worth considering when:

  • The original fan’s obsolete or difficult to find

  • The machine’s operating in hotter, dustier, or tougher conditions

  • The radiator or cooling pack has changed, or

  • The existing setup isn’t delivering enough cooling

And “custom” doesn’t necessarily mean starting from scratch.

With a modular fan system, we can combine different blades, hubs, pitch angles, and materials to suit the application. That gives us more freedom to match the fan to what the cooling system actually needs.

It’s about the whole cooling system

A radiator creates resistance to airflow, so the fan needs to do more than just move a lot of air in open space.

That’s why we look at the radiator, shroud, fan position, speed, available power, space, and operating conditions together.

At Inventive Air Designs, we work with radiator manufacturers, OEMs, and equipment designers to find the right balance between airflow, pressure, power, noise, and fit.
